The first half of the year saw quite a few big budgeted Hindi films that boasted biggest of the superstars of Bollywood, be it Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan or Salman Khan. On the other side Hollywood too saw quite a few big blockbuster films that released in the first half of 2017. If Bollywood had Raees, Kaabil, Tubelight, Jolly LLB 2 etc., Hollywood saw the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Logan etc. The major difference between these films was, apart from box office performance, the critical acclaim. Worldwide Hollywood films have earned billions of dollars, so on that front you can’t really compare the two film worlds. So here we’ll just talk about stuff as basic as critical acclaim that a film received. And clearly on that front Bollywood is lagging far behind. While on one hand the ‘so’ called big films of Bollywood saw mixed to negative reviews unanimously, the Hollywood counterparts and the direct competitions were unanimously praised.
Let’s check it out below:
There have often been opinions that Hollywood might take over Bollywood soon, which I feel is a far-fetched claim, as Hindi films will forever get traction but what they are lacking here is the quality.
So far the film has got the 100 per cent rating as it received all round positive reviews. Many known critics were of the opinion that this is indeed the best Spider-Man movie ever, even better than the much loved Tobey Maguire’s films. While the jury is still out on that, one thing is for sure, there is no stopping Marvel when it comes to churn out critical as well as commercial blockbusters.
This has to be the biggest surprise of the year. Wonder Woman was a game changer in many ways. It became one of the best superhero films of the year and also started a discussion about gender equality in films be it Bollywood or Hollywood. Akshaye Khanna recently told me that the whole point of telling a story is that it should have an impact on you, otherwise why tell a story? This is one film that has become a landmark, as far as female oriented films are concerned. Many critics rated it 3.5 and plus out of five.
This, my personal favourite, and changed the tone of superhero movie making. It is the most unconventional superhero movie of all time. In fact it is a road trip film in the garb of being a superhero film. Many critics were of the opinion that the film deserves an Oscar nod, in fact Hugh Jackman deserves an Oscar nod for his perfect performance as the old man, Logan. The average rating for this one was 4 out of 5.
Before the start of the year 2017, it was nothing short of a gift for the movie buffs as it had a film each by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar films. But the twist in the tale turned out to be the underperformance of quite a few of them. But the box office part comes later, these films suffered even on a basic level – the critic’s response.
First big release of the year, Raees was highly anticipated. It however received mixed reviews from most of the critics. The film was fair but not as good as you expect a film to be, especially when it stars a superstar. The film’s average rating was between 2.5 to 3.
Even though Salman Khan films used to get bad ratings by critics, they used to be a big box office success. However, a lot changed in recent years as even Salman started delivering critically acclaimed films in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. So Tubelight was expected to shine bright and light the box office but it turned out to be a ‘fuse’ light. The average rating by top Indian critics for this film was 1.5 to 2 stars.
Released alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, the film turned out to be a damp squib as far as general critics’ ratings were concerned. Similar to Raees, it’s average rating was too between 2 to 2.5 stars.
As I mentioned above, Hollywood films are not going to take over Bollywood anytime soon but they sure are a threat and that too a big one. But you can’t really blame them, while they are churning critically successful films one after another, Bollywood has to suffice with mediocre films. True you can’t compare Bollywood and Hollywood at the box office due to the difference in reach, but here Hollywood has clearly beaten superstars like Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan at a basic level – the reviews.
In the second half of the year, there is film each starring Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Aamir Khan. Let’s just hope the films are received positively by critics and fans…box office success will follow.
